Their lease expired and they are closed. A sign on the doors says the concept is for sale. Sad is an understatement

I'm torn between 3.5 and 4 stars, but I guess my grumpy side won out today. The burger? Excellent, one of the best I've had recently. You don't get quite the variety of toppings you'd have at, say, 5 guys, but the sauce and veggies were fresh and tasty, as was the bun. The patties were hand-formed and the meat was of good quality. What was the problem, then? The fries. I ordered the Cajun fries, and they were assertively spiced, the way I like that sort of stuff. But I could only eat about half the serving, as there was a good quarter-inch puddle of grease in the bottom of the container. Oily, soggy, really unappealing. The folks behind the counter really need to pay attention to things like that.

I'm not a burger gal, but I have a constant, 24/7 craving for the cheeseburgers at Achatz Burgers. First of all, the 85/15 beef blend is fresh with patties made every day and not shipped in frozen and unloaded off a truck. The same goes for the buns that are baked each day and the fries that are hand-sliced. Better yet, get the flavored fries. The ranch is my favorite. You HAVE to get the chocolate malt. I really mean you HAVE to get it ... in all caps. They use homemade chocolate syrup. I have to go back and try the splitter dogs ... deep-fried hot dogs topped with chili made by the Achatz's cousins that make the Achatz soups. They're also related to the Achatz Homemade Pie Co. folks. Their pies are served at Achatz Burgers, too. I love the interior ... contemporary, clean (eat off the floor clean) with a hint of retro. Very cool. I really hope the Achatz family takes off with their burger joint and expands all over the Detroit area -- as long as they don't lose that family vibe feel they share with all of their customers.

When I go out to eat I rarely order a beef burger. This is the only place I will eat them though! They are pretty wonderful...the fries are a little too greasy for my taste, but compliment the meal well.

Update!! I changed my mind! The burgers ARE amazing and the buns really are the best in town! The burgers are basic, but delicious, no frills, just the way a classic burger should be! Only reason this place doesn't have 5 stars is because I am not 100% sold on the thin, shoe-string fries. This is definitely a neighborhood favorite!

Best burgers ever, best fries ever. There are no words.

I think I need to give this place another shot. First and only time I went, I had to wait about 30 minute for the burgers. Which I was cool with since it was a bit busy. But once we got them we weren't that enthused about them. They were a bit greasy which made soggy buns! But, I do have to say the fries were excellent!

    (3)
  • Hazen R.

The only reason I don't give them five stars is because sometimes they are a bit slow and at times the food has been a little too greasy. But, that said, their burgers are delicious!! Similar to a Five Guys in style, but in my opinion way better. Many types of fries to choose from and their shakes/malts are great too.

I ordered carry out .I ordered supreme burger and rosemary garlic fries with Parmesan. The burger was smaller than I thought it would be, but was VERY GOOD !!!!But the fries had to much rosemary and no cheese. My meal was a bit high at about ten dollars . .I will probably try again if they have coupons

I finally ate here after moving in the vicinity a few months ago. I read all the reviews and heard people say this place is a hometown favorite, so I was starving and figured it would be a good time as ever to give it a go. I'm not disappointed at all. All I ate was one supreme burger, but that thing packs a punch. It's not a slider and seems a little small because it's so packed together, but you feel it. Oh yes you will definitely feel the sweet goodness both while you're eating and afterwards. I probably could have eaten two but one works just fine. It's two patties packed between three buns, and they were among the best buns I ever heard on a burger. So soft and perfect, and they didn't taste store bought or anything. The onions were excellent and the cheese was plentiful. The staff is nice and got my order right (no pickles). It was pretty quick, too. It cost almost $6.50 for one of those, which is a little excessive in my opinion because you don't get anything with it. But still, splurge and try it if you haven't. It's like a Big Mac ...except 50 times better and more fresh. Good stuff, man. Good stuff.

Again, my only complaint is the fries, and the ordering. They need to be more forward about their 1/3 and 1/2 pound burgers being made up of multiple patties, and their fries are horrible. I've tried the garlic parm fries, the chili cheese fries, and plain. Their fries are just too damn thin to be made right. They either burn them and they're overly done, or they take them out cooked and they sit in a pile of grease and become disgustingly soggy. I love how clean this place is. It looks like it has only been opened weeks and it has been opened years.

Love at first bite. The supreme burger took me back to a time when the Big Boy hamburger was served in a paper wrapper at a drive-in - and was actually good. I'd say it's my new favorite burger in town. The supreme was also BIG.. Four patties sit on that delicious bun. I don't think I'll eat for the rest of the day after that. Had the Cajun fries, which were crispy and well-seasoned. I just wish they had malt vinegar for the fries, that would have been perfect. We noticed that when you get to the bottom of the fries, the last stragglers are sitting in a literal pool of grease, but hey. . it's all good. A small order of fries was more than enough for one person. Looking forward to trying the rosemary/garlic fries next time. The restaurant is clean, and I LOVED the photos of hydroplane race boats on the walls. Detroit is the home of the APBA Gold Cup, after all. I'll be back.

Achatz Absolutely has the Best thin patty burger in the Detroit Area. I have been a fan since they first opened, and tell everyone I can about how good these burgers are. I will say the only drawback is the fries. Def plan on sharing them with another, and def plan on not being a fan. The thin fry is a nice concept, but tough to pull off. They are pretty inconsistent. Dont let the fries stop you though - order an extra single burger or a milkshake instead. Heck - the Fudge Brownie is worth going in for on its own. Great American Burger Joint.

  • Michael T.

They have amazing burgers! They're always cooked fresh, and they don't charge you extra for the extras, such as grilled mushrooms or onions. The buns are fresh baked and you can smell them cooking throughout the day. The fries are fresh cut, and can come seasoned with various things, such as ranch, Rosemary garlic, and many others. The staff is always courteous, and well informed about the food that they serve. The soups are made from scratch, and the pies are delicious as well! The only negative is that once you order a, "meal," such as a burger, fries, and a drink, it can be a bit pricy, and they are often short on space if you come during prime eating times, such as lunch. Overall, a great value and amazing food! Give them a try!

Was here again last week. I'm gonna try keeping this brief. I got the Achatz Supreme. The good: Juicy, well-seasoned beef. The bun The not-so-good: Cheese is super salty... I don't remember it being like that. They still put a bit too much secret sauce on their burgers. Said sauce needs more sweetness to stand up to the saltiness. The bun does a bit, but not enough. Fries are as good as ever. Restaurant still appears spotless. $8.50 for an Achatz Supreme and regular fries is a reasonable price, I'd say. Achatz is still a quality burger joint with a nice atmosphere, but Abby Lane does burgers better. Thing is, that place has zero atmosphere and is a bit further away from me. What gets me about Achatz is that they pride themselves on quality/fresh ingredients, yet they use food coloring in their shamrock shake. Just sayin'. I'd gladly stop here for a burger if I'm near St. Clair Shores, but the sauce and cheese could use a little work. 4/5 rather than 5/5.

  • Erin K.

My new favorite quick greasy burger place! I love the secret sauce and the homemade toasted buns. I must be a pig though because the Supreme burger was not enough; I should have ordered two burgers! They have a nice assortment of toppings and different fry varieties like ranch, Cajun and brown butter (and they all were yummy!). They also have Achatz pie and shakes like pumpkin pie and chai tea.

  • Alicia J.

Great burgers! I really like their buns, they were soft, the burgers are misshapen which I like, tells me it's fresh. I had Parmesan fries, they were okay. What I loved most was the brownie I had there. It was sooooooo good.

  • Bob N.

Just a update as I finally tried something other than the kick butt burgers. Tried their ripper chili dog and look out tummy cuz here comes some yummy. Served on their homemade hotdog bun it's a koegel dog deepfried till its ripped them topped with their homemade chili, onions and mustard. OHHHHHH is it good dare I say it....better than Lafayette? You be the judge but now I'm torn I mean ripped. And make sure to get a shake.

Great place. Cool theme and great place to go for a family lunch or dinner. Casual diner. They have great quality food for buger, hot dog, malt shop type establishment. Their buns for the dogs and burgers are freaking awesome. They won't disappoint.

  • Phillip B.

This place is great! Burgers are cooked to perfection and the secret sauce is bomb. We order the fries cooked light, otherwise they are straight crunch

    (5)
  • Misslady N.

Very disappointed when I tried these burgers. They are extremely small, nothing special about the flavor, what little there is or the toppings. The french fries are like matchstick size and extremely greasy. Best bet, get a shake, they are good.

  • Kelly A.

Hit or miss.. It's interior is clean and the decor seems to vary by location. Sometimes the burgers are fabulous; sometimes they're not. Fries, well, not the best. Service quality depends on the location. Hours are terrible, who closes that early on Friday & Saturday? This is one place that it goes from absolutely loving it, to I'll never go there again. Though, I haven't had their desserts, they seem to have a decent selection. This foodie will say it's a mediocre place. I wouldn't discourage you from trying it and forming your own opinion. I would visit again in hopes it's a good burger day.

Delicious fresh and always made to order. Some things can be a little pricey but you get what you pay food. It's awesome and I've never been let down by my food here.

After weeks of craving a good burger I found this place through Yelp with over 50 reviews with a good score, decided to try it out today. I had a double cheeseburger ( not realizing its 4 patties of meat very filling) with grilled onion and mushrooms. Very good taste , buns are not your ordinary type they are fresh and delicious. For a side dish i ordered the large rosemary garlic fries and added Parmesan to them , I could eat these daily they was so good. Average price was around $11 and so worth it.

  • Judy T.

Well' had heard about how great these burgers were! I wasn't impressed. Thought that the homemade bun was a bit wimpy, it was so soft and mushy from the topping it made it hard to eat. The burger itself was good, reminded me of the burgers of my youth. And the fries I expected more, they too were wimpy, maybe underdone. Over all it was very clean and staff were very friendly! But I doubt I will go back sorry to say.

  • Gordon J.

This really is a Eastside Gem. The burgers melt in your mouth. Everything they use is so fresh that the burger tells the whole truth. If your searching for your burger night out put this place at the top of your list you will not regret it.

After baking cookies all evening with my family we decided to try Achatz Burgers since 1) it was within 5 minutes of us 2) Yelp reviews were great!! Their sign claims: Best bun in town! And they weren't kidding! I ordered a chili cheese dog and chili cheese fries. The bun was extremely soft, fresh and fluffy! It was melt in your mouth amazing!! The fries were done perfectly! Far from soggy and not too 'well done'. Not to mention, even with layers of chili and cheese the fries still didn't get soggy! The chili is homemade and extremely flavorful! All the fries are thin and not too thick, just the way I like them. I love the selection of fries but makes the decision pretty hard to choose from. In addition to chili cheese fries my family also tried the parmesan fries and cheese fries. The parmesan fries were definitely something different. It was like eating lays potato chips: betcha can't eat just one. The cheese fries were great too! Morgan at the register was extremely helpful when we asked about what was popular and what she would recommend. The place was extremely clean and quiet. Definitely well kept. The place was pretty busy when we came in around dinner time and everyones orders came out in a timely manner. Can't wait to come back!

This is the only burger place like it in the nearby area. It's got an old-fashioned vibe and is so cute! The food is excellent!!! I highly recommend the Parmesan French fries! YUM. The staff is really friendly and there is plenty of space to sure down.

I was in the mood for a good burger off the beaten path and I succeeded! I found Achatz Burgers through Yelp and was enticed by the other user's reviews. The burgers and fries were amazing...I could not believe how outstanding the buns, in fact, tasted! I even splurged a little and opted for the chili cheese fries. They were exactly what I'd hope for...and I was pleasantly surprised to find the homecut fries were not huge and resembled McD's fry size. Not to mention, the customer service was great and the service was very quick...those are always bonuses. :)

Got the Double Mushroom Swiss Burger, Cajun Fries, and chocolate shake. Burger was top notch and bun was really good. Seasoning on fries was a little too much and shake was on point. Will be back when in area.

5+ Stars This place is LEGIT! It's better than 5-guys & Fries. It's better than In-and-Out Burger. Yes, I said it. "Mr. A" is a real gem of a business owner. He and his wife run a great local St. Clair Shores business. "Best Bunz in Town!" You betch-ya...the wife makes these delectable fluffy pillows of joy from scratch and for both stores ta boot. I Can taste the love with each bite...chomp...chomp...GULP! Try a double bacon burger with secret sauce, grilled onions and mushrooms. Oh baby! Enjoy.

Good Day All- Had the chance to try Achatz yesterday and they are OK, not awe inspiring. Of course this is also on the other side of the earth from where I am and I can get to Blimpie, Miller's, SideTrack, or Redcoat easier. But the people working were very nice and took my order and even found out they could make my strawberry shake with just syrup and no strawberry chunks, bonus. The homemade bun was good but could have been a little bigger so I could get more of its good flavor. The shoestring fries with parmesan were tasty and I never even used the ketchup on them. I guess I am saying it was an enjoyable lunch and if I was in the area I would go back. But I would not pass some of the other places mentioned to get there. Best regards, Tony

My favorite Burger in Detroit, enjoy the thin flavored fries as well, usually get the cajan and add parmesan. All the food here is great and it is all very high quality. Also I know the owner takes pride in his restaurant and product.

Great food for the price!!! service was less then excellent (but what can you expect from high school girls) I am definitely going back!

Burgers are good, but a little heavy. Don't eat within three hours of going to bed! Noisy place, so grab a seat near the counter and be prepared to wait a looong time for your food.

  • Walter K.

Great burger place! The burgers here are very good! Great atmosphere, everything that a burger place should be. I would give the place 5 stars, but I don't like the fries. I don't like shoestring fries, I like thicker dries. If the fries were bigger, I would give the place 5 stars. Truly, one of the best burger places around!

  • Alice A.

We tried Achatz this week and were pleasantly pleased. We ordered the special burger, mushroom burger and bacon cheese. All of the burgers delivered on great taste and the bun was really good. Many places give generic buns, but it definitely adds to the great burger. It doesn't' get soggy and can really hold the burger. I know a lot of people love the fries - we had takeout and maybe fresh and hot they are amazing - but the two mile ride home must not have agreed. They were okay but nothing to cheer about.

Homemade buns, fresh meat, and hand cut fries. It's like the California chain, In and Out Burger. The secret sauce is delicious. I like how it gives you the feel of a 50's diner. I say this is a great place for family!

    (5)
  • Roberta A.

PROS: Love the fresh burgers and the hand-made fries! The burger buns are fresh, moist & delicious and have a bit of a sweet taste. The shakes are thick and tasty. We've been here twice in the last month...love the food! CONS: They do not offer tomatoes and the place is not welcoming enough from the outside. I had no idea their food was so great until I logged onto yelp for a great local burger.

  • Jim B.

The burgers and shakes are very good. Burgers come in all shapes, sizes and flavors and you can't really say this burger is best or that burger is best, it's all very subjective. Having said that, these are darn good. If you have one burger and want to order another one right after it, then it's a good burger. They are on the small side but for the price, they are worth it. The fries are thin, greasy (very greasy) and hammered with powdered flavoring. My daughter loves them. I can't eat them. I'll go back. You should try it.

    (4)
  • Michelle K.

Very delicious burger joint about on par with Five Guys! The meat is fresh and they have lots of toppings to choose from. The fries were just ok, I tasted the rosemary and garlic ones as well as the Cajun ones. They are too thin and it makes them chewy (I prefer thicker fries). I had an out of this world pumpkin pie milkshake here--seriously, it was awesome. The service is great and the inside decor is pretty neat. I will definitely come back here.

  • Nicholas J.

I don't often go out for burgers, but when I do I want to be impressed. This place was amazing and is as close to an In-n-Out Burger you will find in Michigan. The ingredients were all fresh and the burgers are made to order. Be prepared for a wait as quality good takes time to prepare, but is well worth. The variety of fries is a nice touch and the milkshakes were incredible. Fairly priced and the services is top-notch. You will not be disappointed.

  • Maureen B.

So yummy and the food is so fresh. Only complaint was the fries were way too greasy. They were sitting I'm like half an inch of oil.

I have been there twice and excellent food both times. I found the place a bit dark but other than that everything I have had so far has been delicious.

i review food only. no surroundings, and all that other stuff. so... 1. expect a long wait. saturday at 12, took me about 30 mins to get my order. burgers were juicy, authentic n i cudn't stop eating n driving. even good without cheese. the wings... mmm pour a little of their hot sauce on or not, eat them hot and make yourself more excited as the flame makes them disappear down your mouth. dammit i shud hv gotten more.

Meh. Overpriced food that's OK at best.

    (2)
  • Jenna S.

Delicious, tasty burger with fresh toppings. The fries are crispy little delights that I could probably devour two orders of. It's also a bonus that they offer different 'flavors' of fries. Ranch flavor is the best!

  • Natalie F.

The Good: Slider-type burgers are tasty and filling. You can definitely tell they use fresh meat and make the patties daily. The interior was nicely decorated, inviting and CLEAN! Unlike Burger Pointe that has the charm and ambiance of high school cafeteria. Also, parking is ample and there is a front and back entrance/exit. The Bad: The fries are GROSSLY overrated. I had the butter brown fries and ate maybe 6 of them because they were so soggy and oily. And by the way, shoe string fries are terrible to begin with. Give me a basket of less, but more substantial fries instead of 3lbs of shoe string, please and thank you. My boyfriend had the ranch fries and was equally as unimpressed. I tried one of the ranch fries and immediately upon it hitting my palate, my taste buds screamed no more. Also, while he enjoyed his burger he said $5.00 was a bit much for the size. That being said, I'll eat here again if I don't have the extra 7 minutes to go to Burger Pointe in the Village. Better burgers, better fries (although, I would never write home about the fries here either) and loads and loads more toppings. Even if the interior and decor` make me feel like I'm sitting in a county health department waiting area, their burgers can't be beat. I wanted to try a shake at Achatz, but I was full from the burger. Maybe I'll use that as my excuse to stop in again?

I have been wanting to try this place for some time now, today was that day at 12:15. First impressions and well worthy of a A+ was the very clean interior, counters, tables and pop area Rachel who waited on my explained several otpions for me A+ I ordered one Achatz Burger Special 1/3 pound, secret sauce, Grilled Onions on request, lettuce and pickles A I also ordered a Achatz Supreme 1/2 lb Extra Cheese, Extra Meet, center bun, secret sauce "grilled onions" and pickles A+ I ordered Plain fresh cut fries, but they had 7 varieities of fries the frize were fresh cut , but to thin for my likeing as they were the diamater of a pencil, BUT a large order 'filled' a TOGO Box Fries C The Achatz Supreme truly reminded me of what a "BIG BOY' used to taste like 15-20 years ago or maybe even a BIG MAC when it was first introduced so lunch 2 burgers, one large shared frie, no beverages $13.54

  • Meg K.

Very good "diner" burgers - thin and fried with no innovative toppings, and that's okay. Skinny, crispy and tender fries with fun flavor combinations; my daughter loves the brown butter ones. Thick, creamy malts. I'm a thick burger person so I can take it or leave it, but my family LOVES this little burger joint. Good service.

  • William S.

I've read some of the other reviews and unfortunately, I disagree. This place is THE BOMB!! The burger was the best in town. The bun was HOME freakin MADE! It was toasted to perfection. The bun in itself was a delicacy. The lettuce was fresh and chopped finely, as well as the onions. Everything was as fresh as fresh could get. The meat was absolutely delicious. Fresh shakes, awesome hand cut fries - unbelievable stuff. The chili was to die for. This is one awesome burger/coney place. Plus they servce Achatz pie for dessert. They even have Mexican coke in a bottle. It's a bit old school, but I think they want it that way. I guess if you want some fancy/schmancy California burger with all kinds of silly crap on it, you probably won't like this. But if you like a real old school burger - this is the best place for it.

  • Jessica M.

Great burgers! Quality meat, seasoned just right. Not too greasy. The fries are amazing. I loved the Ranch Fries. Very different from any other fries I have ever had. The variety of seasonings for the hand-cut fries they offer sets them apart and adds a distinctive, unique feature to a basic burger joint! Bottle of water, juice box for son, Grilled Cheese, the Ranch Fries and a Single Cheeseburger ran just over $12. Not a bad deal, and I had food left over :)! Clean, neat seating area. They were playing oldies like WOMC used to play, I liked hearing some of my favorite Motown and Oldies songs. They have motorcycles on display and some kind of watercraft. I enjoyed eating inside. They also sell many kinds of their frozen soups in a cooler for you to buy, and they also feature at least 2 soups every day! They also have ice cream, and a few other goodies. Home-made quality food, good prices, plus I loved the atmosphere. I will skip the fast food and come here next time I am near the Nautical Mile!

Everything is awesome at this place. The fries are perfect and offered in many different flavors. The hot dogs served in a fresh baked bun taste so good. The chilli is some of the best I ever had. Now lets get to the burger, it is one of the best burgers I ever tasted. So fresh and tasty. This place is a must try if your trying to find that perfect burger.

I'll admit it. From time to time I really crave a McDonald's Big-Mac. But sometimes I'm left with a feeling of disappointment or regret after leaving the drive-thru. What I should do, when I get those cravings, is head to Achatz Burgers. The Achatz Special is what the Big Mac is only in your most fevered craving dreams! Also, thin cut fries and Mexican (and fountain) Coke!

I wrote this review in May. it seems to have disappeared! My husband and son love this place, but I'm just okay with it. The burgers are good and the buns tasty, but the buns flatten and fall apart mid way through. The fries are hit or miss- not hand cut but real potatoes sliced shoe string style via a machine. Sometimes they are cooked just right and other times they aren't. The owners blame it on potatoes. The malts are good. My biggest issue with this place is that the owner becomes irate if you try to tell him something is just not right. He started yelling at me when I asked him if he did something different with the bun once since it just was flat and crumbly. I looked him straight in the eye and told him there are many other place I can spend my money at and was shocked he would treat a regular customer like this. We were weekly customers now we're once in a blue moon customers. He finally recognized my husband and his tone changed completely and was accomodating. His wife did the same once when I told her my fries were undercooked and another table's look burnt. As I said, it's good, not great and for three of us $30 for burgers, fries and shakes just isn't worth the snottiness of the owners. Oh, and I hate their sign that begs you to use cash instead of a debit card because it 's cheaper for the owners.

I have a familiarity with the Achatz food family and the high quality of their home made products such as their pies and their soups. When I heard that the chain opened up a gourmet styled burger joint I jumped at the chance to try it and see what they had to offer. The decor of the restaurant is a collection of retro nick-nacks from the 50's and 60's diner-esq feel. Where you order is also where you see the line cooks quickly make all the orders, which is cool because you can see exactly how they prepare the food. The staff is really friendly and very helpful, when I asked for the girl who took my orders opinion on certain menu options she told me her true opinion on whether she liked it or not, I love that. I ordered the Achatz Special with the brown butter fries and I had a diet coke. The burger is a 1/4 pound burger on a soft home made (almost brioche/challah like bread that melts in your mouth) bun with cheese, onion pickles and "special sauce".... Basically a Big Mac but classier and authentic. The brown butter fries were salty but where nutty at the same time because of the dark brown butter sauce that they marinade the potatoes in. The pop machine was broken and therefore my soda was flat.... Stupid. The burger was good, but it wasn't filling enough. I feel that if you want to be a staple in gourmet burgers you need to have an 8 oz. standard serving size. The quality of the meat was very tasty and very natural, not frozen or full of fillers or by-products, which is why I'll be back. The fries were cut matchstick-style and were cooked well-done and crispy, which I loved. What I hated was that they turned greasy and fatty after some 10 minuets. I enjoyed the nostalgia and the feel of the burger joint. The menu is very authentic yet very forward with what they offer. My belief is that if Achatz can work out the kinks and lameness, it'll be a solid restaurant.

Great joint for a classic style all-american burger and fries made with fresh ingredients. You may have to wait a few minutes for a burger, but this isn't McD's. I've heard the malts are great too, maybe next trip.

Their burgers are oohhh sooo goood! They are natural beef, which is always a bonus, and make their own buns. In addition to their burgers, their fries are also old fashioned and come in a variety of flavors (ranch, parm, cajun). Their malts are also delicious. They have pretty good prices, and although it's a sit down place, you order at a counter, so you don't tip, which also keeps the cost down. Another bonus: blarin' oldies ;)

This entire "high end burger" trend is starting to get ridiculous. For me to pay $8-$10 bucks for a burger, fries and pop, I expect to get a few things for my money...and sadly at Achatz Burgers, they don't deliver on many of those expectations. 1. The Bun. For that kind of money, I expect a hearty, flavorful, well made bun with some texture, some flavor...basically something more than a bread-based delivery device for the meat that you would get at a fast food joint. And at Achatz it's not there. Their website brags about "baked fresh daily" but it's not the "freshness" of the bun that disappoints, its the thin, flimsy and tasteless version that they serve. 2. The "fixins". In the high-end burger world, I expect crisp lettuce. Think cut onions, preferably spanish reds or something beyond basic white, good thick-cut tomato, etc. And at Achatz you get none of these things. The lettuce is shredded iceberg with zero texture, the white onions are thin and get lost in the mess and the tomato was sad, tasteless, lifeless and ridiculously small for the burger. 3. The meat. Here is the "best" portion of the Achatz Burger, but not by much. For a high-end burger joint...first of all...you should be able to get a medium-rare burger. Here, like at Five Guys, etc. you can't...which I can't understand. If you are going to take the time to make a fresh, homemade, non-frozen food service-type burger, why can't I get it medium rare? Anyway, their burger is good, but not great. It's juicy with decent flavor, but WAY underseasoned and instead of one think patty, they take 2 thin patties to make one 1/3rd pounder, which is "ok" but not as good as a well made thicker patty. They don't sear the meat at all...so their is zero texture and thus the flavor never develops and ultimately the burger is nothing more than just a slightly better version of something you can get at many, many places...and much cheaper. In terms of other items on the menu. The shakes are just ok...hand made, but have a soft serve ice cream taste that you would expect at a fast food joint, not at a high-end burger place and the fries were disappointing. The "regular" fries were undercooked and the "butter" fries were horrible. Zero texture and reminded me of what's going on in the Gulf Coast...an oil slick out of control. Can't recommend them at all. Long story short, Achatz Burgers has some potential, but the execution isn't there and for the money you never get what you would expect. If they would: 1. Sear and put some crust on the burgers and allow for medium rare choices 2. Get a better, more flavorful bun 3. Use "real" ice cream for their shakes 4. Cook the fries to where there is some crust, basically how you are supposed to... Then perhaps 3 stars are in their future, but for now...at those prices, I can't see to giving them more than 2 stars.

I really enjoyed my expierence at this new burger joint! I LOVE LOVE burgers and I was highly impressed with Achatz special which is like a Big Mac....and who doesn't love a big mac? The meat has lots of taste and I loved the buttered buns....soft in the middle and crusty around the edges. They have a few different options for fries, my husband got the plain fries and I got the ranch seasoned fries. Both were delicious.....and cooked perfectly! The staff was also very friendly and came around to make sure everything was good. If you love a laid back burger joint...this is a good option.

Really cool burger spot in St. Clair Shores. I had the Achatz Supreme--aka "gourmet" Big Mac. First off, these buns are INCREDIBLE. You can definitely tell that these are fresh baked. I'm not sure if it's a good thing or a bad thing, but I'd say that the bun on this burger might have been the most memorable part. Also, the "special" sauce, to me, tasted more like a tartar sauce than a traditional thousand island--either way, I thought it worked. I also had some fries with ranch seasoning.....AWESOME. I actually filled a bunch of little cups with ketchup in preparation of hating the fries, but I never touched it. The fries were loaded with ranch seasoning (and butter I think) and I would highly recommend the seasoned fries. Overall, a pretty solid burger a pretty solid lunch for ~$10.

Pretty good! The burger is a little different, but the meat was really good quality. Everything tasted really fresh and the fries were very tasty and they were cooked well. I would recommend this place for sure. It was a bit pricey, but sometimes you get what you pay for! If you are not a burger person or want something different, they did have a bunch of different hot dogs to choose from.

If you have ever had an In-N-Out burger out west, then you know what the best $5 burger in America tastes like. The Achatz Special is on the same level as the infamous Double Double. Achatz fries are also far superior to the crap they serve at Five Guys (one of the most overrated franchises today). The shakes are also a must, you won't believe how quickly it disappears. Overall, another jewel of the Nautical Mile and a nearly flawless experience from beginning to end. If you haven't been, go there now.

I think I need to give this place another shot. First and only time I went, I had to wait about 30 minute for the burgers. Which I was cool with since it was a bit busy. But once we got them we weren't that enthused about them. They were a bit greasy which made soggy buns! But, I do have to say the fries were excellent!

The only reason I don't give them five stars is because sometimes they are a bit slow and at times the food has been a little too greasy. But, that said, their burgers are delicious!! Good stuff.

Great burgers! I really like their buns, they were soft, the burgers are misshapen which I like, tells me it's fresh. I had Parmesan fries, they were okay. What I loved most was the brownie I had there. It was sooooooo good.

Great place. Cool theme and great place to go for a family lunch or dinner. Casual diner. They have great quality food for buger, hot dog, malt shop type establishment. Their buns for the dogs and burgers are freaking awesome. They won't disappoint.

Very disappointed when I tried these burgers. They are extremely small, nothing special about the flavor, what little there is or the toppings. The french fries are like matchstick size and extremely greasy. Best bet, get a shake, they are good.

Oh baby! Enjoy.

Good stuff.

So yummy and the food is so fresh. Only complaint was the fries were way too greasy. They were sitting I'm like half an inch of oil.

I have been there twice and excellent food both times. I found the place a bit dark but other than that everything I have had so far has been delicious.

I think I need to give this place another shot. First and only time I went, I had to wait about 30 minute for the burgers. Which I was cool with since it was a bit busy. But once we got them we weren't that enthused about them. They were a bit greasy which made soggy buns! But, I do have to say the fries were excellent!

  • Hazen R.

The only reason I don't give them five stars is because sometimes they are a bit slow and at times the food has been a little too greasy. But, that said, their burgers are delicious!! Similar to a Five Guys in style, but in my opinion way better. Many types of fries to choose from and their shakes/malts are great too.

  • Jaclyn S.

Another bonus: blarin' oldies ;)

i review food only. no surroundings, and all that other stuff. so... 1. expect a long wait. saturday at 12, took me about 30 mins to get my order. burgers were juicy, authentic n i cudn't stop eating n driving. even good without cheese. the wings... mmm pour a little of their hot sauce on or not, eat them hot and make yourself more excited as the flame makes them disappear down your mouth. dammit i shud hv gotten more.

Delicious, tasty burger with fresh toppings. The fries are crispy little delights that I could probably devour two orders of. It's also a bonus that they offer different 'flavors' of fries. Ranch flavor is the best!

I love this place! And like that it is family owned even more! Burgers are tasty, "brown butter" fries are unique and tasty. Prices are in line with similiar places like 5 guys. Always have great, friendly service!

Burgers are good, but a little heavy. Don't eat within three hours of going to bed! Noisy place, so grab a seat near the counter and be prepared to wait a looong time for your food.
